The aim for both teams is to get possession of the puck; ie. Control the play.

This generally means winning the face off back to the defence; but, the coach should be looking for opportunities to surprise or take advantage of the other team’s weaknesses.

Don’t forget if you lose the draw you’re on defence. 

On every face off in every zone the player taking the face off should have a plan and share it with his team mates. The wingers should always know their first responsibility and should start moving towards that as soon as possible. Preferably as the puck hits the ice.
